Combating Climate Change by Preventing Food Waste

Pune, Maharashtra |October to November 2022

Combating Climate Change by Preventing Food Waste The National Launch Pad VI 2022 organised a competition with the theme “Initiating Climate Action from Classrooms”. For this, we selected the topic, “Combat Climate Change by Preventing Food Waste”.

Preventing food from going to waste is one of the easiest and most powerful actions we can take to lower our climate change footprint by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and conserving natural resources.

To understand more about this, the students of Grade IX did a food-waste audit on the school cafeteria. Students weighed the food waste from students’ plates each day for a week and found out the carbon footprints.

Students learned about the ways in which food impacts the environment by recording data from this audit. The audit engaged basic science and math skills to convert food waste weights to CO2 footprints.

Combating Climate Change by Preventing Food Waste After this, students partook in the following activities:

1. Creativity with leftover food: Food waste fell sharply during the lockdown period as people stuck at home began to use leftovers, plan meals and freeze food rather than throw it away. Once lockdown ended, however, food waste rose again. Even leftover food can be made into creative dishes.

We conducted this activity and students came up with wonderful cuisines that did not even look like it is prepared from leftover food.

2. Student Blogs on the School Website: We also encouraged our students to use electronic media to highlight their experiences working as a food warrior on the school website.

3. Food Nutrition Charts in the Cafeteria: Students prepared charts with food nutritional values and displayed in the school cafeteria.

For this project, the participating faculty also received the most Effective Presentation Award.

Being a Friend Indeed:
Hosting the Sagarmitra Abhiyan Session

Pune, Maharashtra | November 12th, 2022

Hosting the Sagarmitra Abhiyan Session On November 12th, 2022, S.B. Patil Public School organised the Sagarmitra Abhiyaan session for the students of Grades VI to XI. A near-680 students partook in the event which involved collecting dry plastic waste.

Leading the session was Mr. Vinod Bodhankar, the founder of the Sagarmitra Abhiyan. He specifically oriented grade VII students. Here he explained the types of plastic, those which are recyclable, and the recycled products,

Hosting the Sagarmitra Abhiyan Session This collaboration is an ongoing event and experience wherein dry plastic waste is collected every month and sent in for recycling. In January, the students collected 37kgs of waste plastic and sent it for recycling.

The objective of this event was to identify main barriers or difficulties faced in reducing plastic waste from household garbage. This activity also shed light on the difficulty faced in segregating plastic waste from mixed trash and residual waste streams.

Hosting the Sagarmitra Abhiyan Session The activity helped inspire students to be active participants in conserving the environment; to understand the importance of recycling and minimising the consumption of plastic products; use plastic materials only when in dire need; realise why plastic should not end up in land-fills; understand the ill-effects of plastic on marine eco-systems; and to promote and conserve marine resources for the future of the planet and its living beings.

By the end of the session, students were immensely impacted positively. They learned, understood and promised to practice recycling and minimising the use of plastic; segregating the different types of waste - plastic waste, e- waste, biodegradable waste, etc.; and encourage and motivate others to be true friends of ocean and nature itself.

We thank the principal, Dr. Bindu Saini; and vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda for helping us organise this event. We also thank section coordinator, Ms. Vandana Sangle for collaborating with Mr. Bodhankar and commencing this initiative in our school. We are also gracious to the faculty members: Ms. Darshana Kamat, Ms. Anjali Gugale, and Ms. Varsha Deshmukh for hosting this event so successfully.

Journalling the Understanding of Accounts:
Taking Aid from the Expert :)

Pune, Maharashtra | October 19th, 2022

Journalling the Understanding of Accounts Certain subjects require more of practicality and applicability than theory so as to understand it. Such is the case when it comes to accountancy. To grasp the practicality of accountancy, the students of Grade XI-C (Commerce) visited S.B. Patil Public School’s accounts department to understand the different types of accounts maintained. Following is a narrative by Erleen Kaur Nezar, a student of the class:

“To understand the subject of accounts better and more practically, we visited the accounts department of our school. We were accompanied by our subject teacher, Ms. Aayesha Syed.

Our senior accountant, Ruchita ma'am gave us information about different accounts maintained like: cash book, petty cash, journals, ledgers, etc. During the visit, she also informed us about different everyday transactions. She specifically explained about the dual concept: debit what comes in, and credit what goes out; debit the receiver, credit the giver; debit all expenses and losses, credit all gains and incomes.

We were excited to practically observe all these things which we learned theoretically in our subject. One of the concepts we learned was accrual, that is, how transactions are entered into accounts before the cash or the amount is received.

Then came the most interesting part: unknown accounts. As explanation: unknown accounts are recorded as a “suspense a/c” which, in lay-man terms, is a temporary account made for entries of unknown accounts – and that is subsequently removed once the account is known.

We asked several questions about different types of errors during preparation of financial accounts, how to rectify them, how bank transactions take place. Both Aayesha ma’am and Ruchita ma’am answered the questions that helped clear our concepts. Whilst this visit may have been brief, it was indeed very interesting, informative and fruitful to all that we learn in class.

Lastly, we the students of the commerce section of XI-C would like to thank our principal, Dr. Bindu Saini ma'am; class, vice principal, Padmavati ma’am, class and subject teacher, Aayesha ma'am, and of course, the senior accountant, Ruchita ma'am for giving us this wonderful opportunity of practically observing the maintenance of accounts in an organisation.

From all of us at XI-C… a biiiig thank you!”

Food Wastage in Marriages:
Conducting Workshops to Inculcate the Respect and Value for Food

Pune, Maharashtra | October to November 2022

River Clean-up Activity Food wastage contributes to one of the major wastages that occur in households. People tend to make more than they consume, or are fussy about what has been prepared thus leading to wastage that could in-turn feed the starving populations around the world.

These workshops, which started in the first week of October and will go on until the first week of November, are given by several guest speakers who are experts on the topic.

The students are audience to understanding the various ways food wastages, especially in marriages and families occur. They also learn how food wastage leads to environmental pollution since it expels great amounts of CO2.

The holistic development of students and faculty is an essential part of S.B. Patil Public School’s creed. Not only is this holistic development about academics and co and extra-curriculars but also it also incorporates the values learned that will help them be better humans.

We sincerely thank our principal, Dr. Bindu Saini; and vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda; and science teachers, Ms. Darshana Kamat, Ms. Trupti Zarkar and Ms. Susmita Roy for organising these insightful seminars

Building Climate Resilience:
Ensuring a Sustainable Future through Quality Education

Pune, Maharashtra | October 2022

Building Climate Resilience “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” - George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

The above quote inspires and motivates us to bring a change in our lives that remains a mark of progress and sustainable future and a change for saving our environment is the first step towards such progress. Our children need to learn the importance of saving the environment to develop resilience from the ill effects of the growing pollution and climate change that influences each aspect of life on Earth. We consistently take initiatives to make our students aware about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and make it a part of their curriculum and activities for bringing a change that is for the betterment of the world.

Building Climate Resilience Students of Grade VII participated in the Climate Action Project through a global online platform and initiative called Take Action global with earthproject.org.

The Climate Action Project is a free student-centered project, a six-week journey involving more than 3.4 million students across 149 countries. It is supported by governments in 15 countries and is founded by educator, speaker, author and environmentalist, Koen Timmers who was awarded the Global Teacher Prize in 2017 and 2018. The project aims to lead to a change of behavior through education.

Climate Action Project @ climate-action.info is a collaboration with WWF, Earth Day, and NASA, and endorsed by Jane Goodall, President Juan Migues Santos, Prince William, HH the Dalai Lama, and other eminent scientists, public figures, world leaders and Ministries of Education across 16 countries. It was covered by media across 45 countries including BBC, CNN and the National Geographic.

Building Climate Resilience The students were guided by their class teachers and brainstormed the causes, effects of climate change and solutions for combating the ill effects of climate change. They made posters, models, wrote poetry, solved worksheets, took interviews of relatives and grandparents as a part of the activities of the project.

Building Climate Resilience The students collaborated with Beaconhouse Garden Town School, Pakistan; and Positivo School, Brazil and shared the issues related to ill-effects of climate change in their respective countries. They shared their experiences of participating in the six-week Climate Action project. It was a heartwarming and fruitful collaboration for all the participating countries and was appreciated by all teachers and participants.

Teachers and Students all across the globe attended the Climate Action Webinar on the 3rd of November to mark the end of the project. They witnessed speeches by 30 prominent and famous environmental and youth activists, scientists, economists, magicians, princes, politicians and intellectuals. Also, they attended a webinar with David Pallash, Lego Group to collaborate on an activity of sharing their ideas through building sustainable cities through models made with Lego blocks for which many students responded enthusiastically.

Building Climate Resilience The new playing blocks of Lego are made of polyethylene terephthalate which is recycled from bottles, and is a step forward in the brand's sustainability mission. Thus, this webinar was conducted to motivate students to “Build the change” for a sustainable future.

With an overwhelming response from students, our school has been selected for another Lego challenge called “From school to Home “challenge for which the students will share their solutions to climate change and making sustainable cities. The students will have the opportunity for their solutions to be published on the Lego and Take Action Global website.

Building Climate Resilience All our students and participating students and teachers were awarded with certificates of participation in the Climate Action project and Webinar. Also, our school has been awarded with the Lego “Bu ild the Change” certificate for a builder of change.

We are thankful to Koen Timmers, the entire team of Take Action Global and earthproject.org for giving us this wonderful opportunity to participate in this project.

Ms. Anjali Gugale also received a free copy of the Glassbox e-book and audiobook of “Climate Action by Georgina Stevens” for answering questions during the Climate Action Day webinar and for being among the first 500 attendees.

From Us, with Empathy and Love:
A Visit to the Vatsalya Shikshan Sanstha

Pune, Maharashtra | October 6th and 8th, 2022

River Clean-up Activity On Thursday, October 6th and Saturday, October 8th, 2022, the students of Grades IX to XI visited the Vatsalya Shikshan Sanstha, Dehugaon, for the mentally challenged children above 18 yrs.

River Clean-up Activity Husband and wife, Mr. Vilas Devtarase and Mrs. Vrushali Devtarase are the couple who run the center. They have devoted their lives to this noble task. Mrs Devtarase explained to the students when, how and why they decided to open the center. She further went on to narrate how the children residing at their shelter are not only mentally challenged but also orphans. She said this whilst elaborating about certain mental disabilities and why they occur.

It was very disheartening to hear and even watch how these children struggle even for the basic acts of every day. The students were touched and overwhelmed with emotions when they interacted with the orphans.

River Clean-up Activity As a sign of affection, our school students donated groceries such as rice, dals, sugar, spices and chocolates; all of which were contributed with an open heart. The teachers too donated oil and ghee.

River Clean-up Activity All-in-all, the experience of the visit in itself was a heart-rendering and touching experience. Following is a testimonial by Riddhi Vaidhya of Grade XI:

“The visit to Vatsalya Rehabilitation Centre was indeed an eye opener for us. We came back with a lot of take-aways, one of them being the kind act of empathising instead of simply pitying.

River Clean-up Activity We express our gratitude towards the centre for letting us visit their orphanage. It was well equipped with several rooms, a common gathering area for different activities, a hygienic kitchen and other basic facilities.

A set time table and planned activities ensured that the students spend their time well and get to follow a routine just like what other students get. We are also eagerly looking forward to seeing more of their creative and festive artefacts.

We wholeheartedly appreciate the efforts taken by the entire team of the Vatsalya for this initiative, the difficult task that they are passionately carrying out, and a salute to their hard work and dedication to help the specially-abled surpass their disabilities and live a comfortable life.”

Should you, dear readers, ever get a chance, please do come and visit this orphanage once. It will surely be a life-altering experience. Kudos to the team at the Vatsalya Shikshan Sanstha. We wish their team the very best for every endeavour they undertake towards taking care of such children with special needs.

At the Elpro International School’s Model United Nations Conference

Pune, Maharashtra | September 30th and October 1st, 2022

Elpro International School’s Model United Nations Conference On September 30th and October 1st, 2022, Elpro International School, Chinchwad organized a Model United Nations Conference. A near 130 students participated with 32 students in the AIPPM committee. Amey Ajgar of Grade X partook in the event. Following is his testimonial on it:

“It all started with an email stating that it is the last day to register for the reputed Elpro International School’s Model United Nations conference, and as always, in search of some adventure, I registered for it.

As I was the last on the registration roll but I got my allotment on the very first day of conference and luckily due to my good MUN experience, I was allotted for Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

didn’t have that winning confidence on the very first day but as the committee started and we proceeded with the formal committee proceedings, my habit of following politics and geopolitics helped me while writing my speeches, replies and debates.

Elpro International School’s Model United Nations Conference The book which I’m still reading “A Constructive Parliamentarian” by the great Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji helped me while having back channel talks with other delegations and aided me prove majority of 30/32 while presenting the final draft resolution with me as the author of it.

The two days were filled of debates, knowledge-passing, brainstorming and socializing, and all of it was way too much fun to handle.

I met some really interesting people who strengthened my network. If there are lessons I learned, I realised that we should never underestimate ourselves as well as others because life has a lot to surprise you with.

It was indeed a very happy moment for me when I got the Best Delegate Award in All India Political Party Movement Committee. From the depth of my heart I thank the school management, principal ma’am, vice-principal ma’am, and as special thanks to Anjali ma’am, Pravina ma’am, my friends and my parents for always supporting me unconditionally.”

Thank you Amey for the splendid testimonial. And as always, we wish you the very best as you walk the steps of life, and we have full faith and confidence in you that you will find success.

All for the Environment:

Pune, Maharashtra | September 24th, 2022
