The Maajhi Shaala, Sundar Shaala Abhiyaan:
A Report on the Activities Conducted by the Students and Staff
Pune, Maharashtra | February 2024
Introduction
With the advent of Swachhta Abhiyaan, many projects have started so as to build awareness about the benefits of cleanliness and ill-effects of unclean surroundings. But spreading awareness is not enough. Each one needs to be an agent of change by not only practicing it themselves but also acting as a role model and instilling the values in others.
The Majhi Shaala, Sundar Shaala is one such project wherein school students take the charge of not just keeping their school clean and taking the necessary steps to maximise the beauty both externally and internally; but also participating in numerous activities and events wherein they grow holistically and mature mentally, physically, spiritually and socially.
The holistic development of students has always been part of S.B. Patil Public School’s creed. Furthermore, the school has always taken corporate social responsibility seriously: from using solar powered electricity to having a compost pit, and harvesting rainwater; from segregating wet and dry waste to aptly disposing e-waste.
Ergo, following is a report of all the activities and events conducted at school which make the students and staff of S.B. Patil Public School shout in unison: “Maajhi Shaala, Swachh Shaala!”

Ours is even a plastic-free school: we avoid the use of plastic in all forms possible. Students are even encouraged to bring steel water bottles. The National Deworming Week
Pune, Maharashtra | 13th to 20th February, 2024
In addition to fostering children's academic growth, it's crucial to prioritise their physical development, which is significantly influenced by outdoor activities. And even though much precaution and care is taken, outdoor play can predispose children to various illnesses, notably worm infections, which are particularly prevalent in early childhood.
Worm infestations can compromise children's physical well-being, consequently hindering their overall personal development. These infections contribute to malnutrition and anemia, perpetuating a cycle of weakness and fatigue in affected children. This not only impedes their physical and intellectual progress but also undermines their ability to concentrate on studies.
Recognising the severity of worm infestations among children, the Government of India has initiated several measures to combat them. One such effort is the National Deworming Week, which was scheduled by the Health Department from 10th to 16th February, 2024.
The primary aim of the campaign was to distribute deworming medication to children aged 1 to 6 years and both school-going and non-school-going children aged 6 to 19 years at schools. The endeavor sought to enhance children's health, nutritional status, education, and overall quality of life
And thus, with student’s holistic progress and overall health being the prime focus of S.B. Patil Public School, the programme was also implemented and carried out from the 13th to 20th February, 2024
Albendazole tablets were given to schools which were then distributed to all students (or their parents) aged 3 years to 19 years as it is deemed a safe deworming medication for both children and adults with minimal side effects.
We thank our principal, Dr. Bindu Saini; vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda; admin manager, Mr. Manish Dhekale; and our school nurses: Ms. Sujata Bhalerao and Ms. Kalyani Jadhav for effectively.

Our Book Donation Practice
Pune, Maharashtra | 2023-24
Encouraging the holistic development of both student and faculty has always been part of S.B. Patil Public School’s creed. Emphasis is laid on diverse arenas such as academics, sports, visual and performing arts, creative and critical thinking, etc for students; and in-house and external training and development, 360-degree appraisals, motivation to pursue and publish research papers, etc for faculty.
But above all these, S.B. Patil Public School’s value system of Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Humility, Empathy, Simplicity and Trust is heavily stressed on so as to encourage both student and faculty to become good human beings.
Green and CSR activities play an integral part in the school’s system. One such activity is our book donation practice. It is here that students, faculty and parents are encouraged to donate books to the library when they feel like, or especially on any occasion such as a student’s birthday. Many parents have donated books to the library. In fact, since January 2023, over 113 books have been donated by 31 people including students, parents and faculty, and all this has helped us now have over 11,500 books as on January 2024.
This practice not only encourages those who love to read to share that gift with the rest of us, but also help others earn and learn the value of reading books. In fact, the school library can now even be accessed by parents.

The E-Waste Collection and Recycling Activity
Pune, Maharashtra | 25th January, 2024
S.B. Patil Public School has always emphasised the importance of Green and CSR activities as it understands that service to society is through everyday eco-friendly activities.
Thus, students from Grade I to XII collected e-waste and brought it to the school. Every floor in the school had boxes or bins for collecting the e-waste. Students from each floor brought e-waste from their homes and submitted it in these boxes.
On 25th January, 2024, the school authorities submitted all the waste collected to the Poornam Ecovision Foundation situated at Sinhgad Road, Pune. Poornam EcoVision’s aim is to provide holistic solutions to the environmental problems; and is a social enterprise committed to betterment of society and environment. This practice has been followed for the past three to four years in our school and we hope to continue it further.
Through this activity, we were able to collect and recycle seven to eight boxes of e-waste appropriately to the Poornam EcoVision Foundation. instead of throwing it away. And through this, students not only contributed towards betterment of the environment and nature but were made aware about the impact of e-waste and spread awareness by collecting it. They further developed a sense of kindness and care by taking such small steps towards conserving the environment.

A Collaborative Activity with BEMS
Pune, Maharashtra | 17th January 2024
On 17th January 2024, a Twinning Programme was conducted at S B Patil Public School’s Innovative Lab. The event was a collaboration between our school and Beena English Medium School. The event hosted 41 students and two teachers from the guest school: Ms. Jabeen Shaikh and Ms. Shabnam Shikalgar.
There were ten students from our school and the organisers: Ms. Vandana Sangle, Ms. Varsha Deshmukh, Ms. Nishtha Nath and Ms. Anuprabha Bhatt.
The objectives of the collaborative math activity were to make regular shapes using matchsticks and deriving their formula of perimeter; and to make irregular or regular shapes on Geoboard and find out the area and perimeter of the same.
The first activity was an individual activity wherein students were given a set of matchsticks (15 sticks), and were asked to make polygon using two matchsticks. However, to make a polygon we require minimum 3 sides. Hence to this, students answered that making a polygon with two sides is not possible and commenced making polygons using three, four and five sides.
The second activity was a group activity wherein on each table a geoboard was placed with sum rubber bands. Students were asked to take a rubber band and make any shape by placing them on the dots around the geoboard.
They start by making a 2x2 square. After placing the rubber bands, the students started to count the perimeter and area of the shape by counting the number of squares around the boundary (perimeter) and the squares enclosed inside the shape (area). Each square was of 1cm.
They tried to repeat the same activity for 2x3 rectangle and 3x3 square. Students from S.B. Patil Public School helped the students from BEMS to perform the activity.
The event was followed by snacks for all students and teachers from Beena English Medium School. Our school also provided transport facility for the students and teachers of BEMS.
Through this, students were able to learn new methodologies and techniques to derive formulas from two simple activities which they can try at home anytime. They also enjoyed the activity and were excited to visit a different school and be part of an activity with full zeal. The entire event surely did inculcate collaborative learning skills not only amongst the students of Beena English Medium School but also of S. B. Patil Public School
Feedback

On an Educational Trip to Curb Pollution
Pune, Maharashtra | 25th October, 2023
by Aditya Thombare (X-A)
On 25th October, 2023 our group of Grade X students: Aditya Thombare, Darshil Mali and Sunidhi C. from X-A; Anuj Narkhade from X-B; and Shruti Bodke from X-C visited a construction site on the following date in order to learn more and inform them about the harm caused to them by the dust pollution caused during construction.
This visit was part of the GreenLine project, which aimed to visit a construction site and inform labourers about the health risks posed by pollution.
Darshana Ma'am, the secondary section coordinator, was with us. She mentored, guided and assisted us through the project.
We spoke with the head of a nearby construction site after going there. We told them about the effects of the dust pollution and how it happens. Comprehending this matter, we elucidated to them the preventive measures for the corresponding issues.
We were surprised to find that they were already implementing most of these fixes, some of them even more effectively. There, we had an excellent discussion with the head.
We received information that we were unaware of and we imparted knowledge to them that they were unaware of. All in all, we had a great learning experience with this. The fact that the labourers and those performing the groundwork were aware of it and secure was crucial. Additionally, each of us gained invaluable practical experience that will undoubtedly come in handy in the future. We are all incredibly appreciative that the school gave us this wonderful opportunity.

A Memorable Field Trip to Tolani Maritime Institute
Pune, Maharashtra | 28th July, 2023
by Darshil Mali | X-A
On 28th July, 2023, all Grade X students from sections A to E embarked on an exciting field trip to Tolani Maritime Institute. The day was off to a promising start as we, a total of 180 students, gathered at the school campus at 8:30 am, eagerly awaiting the adventure that lay ahead. Accompanying us were our teachers: Ms. Darshana Kamat, Ms. Nirupama Kale, Ms. Rachana Sisodiya, Ms. Leena Verghese, Ms. Niveditha Biswas, Ms. Rashami Godiya, Ms. Anita Suryavanshi and Ms. Susmita Roy.
The journey to the institute was a delightful experience, thanks to the lush greenery that surrounded us due to the ongoing rainy season. The beauty of nature outside the windows added to our excitement, making the trip feel like a refreshing getaway.
Upon reaching the institute, we were warmly welcomed by Captain Sharma, who gave us a fascinating introduction to the world of Merchant Navy. His insights and experiences piqued our interest and left us inspired to explore the possibilities this field had to offer.
Tolani Maritime Institute left a strong impression on us with its well-equipped facilities and machinery, tailored to cater to the needs of Merchant Navy aspirants. The campus was not only modern but also impeccably clean and well-maintained, creating a conducive environment for learning and growth.
The staff at the institute were friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. They graciously answered all our queries, leaving us with a sense of assurance that this institute would indeed provide an excellent learning experience for those seeking a career in the maritime industry.
One aspect that stood out to us was the institute's emphasis on sports and recreational activities. In addition to academics, the institute promoted physical fitness and mental well-being through sports such as badminton, table tennis, swimming, and boating. The availability of these activities added a fun and balanced dimension to the learning process.
As the clock struck 01:30 pm, it was time for us to bid farewell to Tolani Maritime Institute and head back to our school campus. Despite our departure, the memories of this wonderful field trip will stay with us for a long time. We returned with a newfound appreciation for the Merchant Navy profession and a deeper understanding of the opportunities that await those who venture into this exciting field.
I would like to conclude by saying that the trip to this institute was not only a memorable and fun experience, but was also quite an informative one as many of the aspects of Merchant Navy which were unclear to us students before were cleared and elaborated greatly upon, with a spice of useful information on the top.
The enriching experience of exploring the campus, the students' life, the staff's personalities and the overall reverie that the institute had was mesmerizing and truly a wonderful experience. I am sure it encouraged many of the students to set merchant navy as their career goal for their bright futures.
We thank our principal, Dr. Bindu Saini ma’am; vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda ma’am; and all the teachers who accompanied us who helped us get such a memorable experience. Thank you!
Loyalty, Strength, Wisdom and Trust:
Celebrating Blue Colour Day
Pune, Maharashtra | 28th July, 2023
The pre-primary and primary sections of S.B. Patil Public School celebrated Blue Colour Day on 28th July, 2023. The objective of the activities held were to recognise the colour blue through different games and play-way activities.
Blue symbolises loyalty, strength, wisdom and trust; and all the children came dressed up in different shades and hues of blue
The classrooms were decorated considering blue as a theme. The significance of blue colour was reiterated through various activities like paper dabbing, palm printing etc which made an amazing learning experience and had a long lasting effect on each child. To make the activity more inclusive, children brought different objects like toys, decorative items, and drawings based on the theme.
All-in-all, it was a pleasant and cool Blue Colour Day for all students.
Folding it Right:
The Grade I and II Origami Puppet and Bookmark-making Activity
Pune, Maharashtra | 25th July, 2023
When students follow instructions through the paper-folding challenges, both the motor and visual areas of their brains are activated.
Students practiced their activity with the help of newspapers cut-outs and then they did their final activity using craft paper. Grade I students made puppets of dogs, elephants, butterflies and rabbits whilst Grade II students made origami bookmarks and foxes using craft paper. Without a doubt, students enjoyed the activity.
Encouraging an interest in art and craft, honing the needed creative skills, promoting language development, learning behavioral skills and building social relationships are essential traits needed for overall social, emotional and mental development. And this is why students are encouraged to partake in numerous activities of all sorts.

In Reverence to Our Teachers:
Celebrating Guru Purnima
Pune, Maharashtra | 3rd July, 2023
“Gurus are like candles who burn themselves to give light to others.” – Swami Vivekananda
Guru Purnima is celebrated on 3rd July 2023 to honour our teachers and mentors. It marks the birthday of Veda Vyasa, the sage who authored the Mahabharata and compiled the Vedas
Teachers have always held a special place in the lives of their followers since ancient times. An age-old Sanskrit phrase “Matah Pitah Guru Daivam” states that the first place in a person’s heart and mind is reserved for the mother, second for father, third for Guru and fourth for God. Thus, teachers have been given a place higher than God.
A special assembly was organised by Grade III students on this day. They participated in the celebration by presenting cultural performances, reciting shlokas, gayatri mantras, delivering speeches, songs and dances all dedicated to their teachers.
Students performed a skit to show gratitude towards their gurus. Students even gave roses to our principal, Dr. Bindu Saini ma’am; HM, Ms. Shubhangi Kulkarni; and coordinators, Ms. Archana Prabhune and Ms. Nayna Taru.
This assembly served as a platform to acknowledge the relentless efforts and dedication of our teachers in fostering holistic growth among students. This celebration was a testament to our deep respect and gratitude towards our teachers and mentors.

Chapter 3: Understanding Quadrilaterals (Grade VIII)
Throughout the month of June, the Mathematics Department conducted creative activities in the school’s Math Lab. The idea was to foster art integration within the numerical subject so as to help ease the understanding of various topics in Math for students of Grade VIII.
For this purpose, the faculty, who were teaching students quadrilaterals, conducted an activity wherein students made earrings and necklaces.
This art integration surely brought about a deeper understanding of a subject many students are scared of. We thank the teachers of the Mathematics Department for organising such a fun-filled, innovative and knowledge-driven activity.
Chapter 1: Integers (Grade VII)
In the month of April 2023 conducted creative activity in Maths Lab, students made Integer machine to understand the rules of Integers.
We thank the math teachers and department for investing such thought and creativity to make learning a subject like math so easy.
We bring is article to a close with testimonials from the students who were part of these activities.
“I, Gauravi A.M, am student of S.B. Patil Public School, Ravet, Grade VIII-D. As a student I enjoy doing math. The thing I love most in the subject is doing it practically in Maths Lab.
One of my favourite and superb activity was “Jewellery Making Using Quadrilaterals from Paper”. It also cleared my concepts about quadrilaterals and its properties. I even got beautiful and adorable jewellery to add to my collection. Thanks!” - Gauravi A.M. (VIII-D)
“I am the student of S.B. Patil Public School, and I want to narrate one of my experiences of about Math Lab wherein I learnt rational numbers.
As a student I want to say that due to the mathematics lab, the concept of the properties of rational numbers which I was felt was hard to understand in the classroom, was much easier to grasp.
As part of the activity in the lab, we made a rotational wheel through which I understood the properties of rational numbers very easily. It was a very creative and interesting activity, and our teacher taught us very innovatively. I enjoyed doing it. It cleared my concepts about the particular topic. It was such a wonderful experience for me in maths. Now I do not have fear of the topic.” - Rudra Kharatmol (VII-G)
Let there be Zero Hunger:
A Life Skill Session on SDG
Pune, Maharashtra | 29th June, 2023
In 2015, the United Nations set a number of ambitious goals to be achieved in the next 15 years to make our world a better place for everyone: end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. The UN Sustainable Development Goals, a collection of 17 global goals set by the UN’s member countries, are a roadmap on how to transform our planet where everyone can live in peace, prosperity, and dignity.
Hunger is the leading cause of death in the world. Our planet has provided us with tremendous resources, but unequal access and inefficient handling leaves millions of people malnourished
Every Friday, students of Grade IV are taught about Sustainable Goal and the theme for the month. The goal that we selected for the month of June was Goal # 2: Zero Hunger. The goal aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
On 9th June, 2024, students were informed students about the goal via a presentation and a few videos. They were informed about various facts about SDG #2: Zero Hunger and why it is important to eliminate hunger in the world.
SDG #2 also aims to provide universal access to safe and nutritious food, end all forms of malnutrition, double the productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, sustainable food production and resilient agricultural practices, maintain the genetic diversity in food production, invest in rural infrastructure, agricultural research, technology and gene banks, prevent agricultural trade restrictions, market distortions and export subsidies, and ensure stable food commodity markets and timely access to information.
To achieve these in our daily lives there are the following recommendations:
1. Make periodic donations to any charity you want to support.
2. Buy local and in-season food. Try to grow some of your own food.
3. Don’t waste food. Store produce and leftovers if you don’t have the chance to eat them before they go bad.
4. If we promote sustainable agriculture with modern technologies and fair distribution systems, we can sustain the whole world’s population and make sure that nobody will ever suffer from hunger again
On 16th June, 2024, students were asked to share their food with their classmates. At the end, they were asked to share their experience about food-sharing. This activity helped the students to understand the importance of sharing and why it is important to share food and how can they store it when in excess.
On 23rd June, the class was divided into various groups and students were asked to have a group discussion on the topics like End Poverty, End Malnutrition, Agricultural Subsidies, Donate Food and Support Local Farmers
Through this, students learned how to end malnutrition in all its forms; they learned about sharing of food when in excess; how to eliminate wastage of food; and how to support local farmers.

Pune, Maharashtra | 27th June, 2023
The showers of monsoon bring with them an array of festivals, Ashadhi Ekadashi being one of them.
On 27th June, 2023, the students of Grade I and II celebrated Ashadi Ekadashi with great enthusiasm. The objective of the celebration was to inform students about the culture of Maharashtra since it was a visually and linguistically expressive way to celebrate Maharashtra’s glorious heritage, culture and tradition. The occasion itself teaches us to forget enmity and embrace one another and create bond of love in an environment of cultural harmony.
With students dressed up as devotees: boys wearing dhotis, kurtas and topis; and girls wearing sarees and traditional dresses, two students dressed up as Lord Vithal Rukmai.
Teachers told the importance of the day, informing students that Ashadi Ekadashi is also known as MahaEkadashi. On this day, the devotees worship portraits of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. They spend the entire night singing hymns and prayers whilst keeping a fast.
They were also informed of how the famed Pandharpur Waari Yatra comes to an end on this day. Pandharpur God, Vithoba, an embodiment of Lord Vishnu is revered with devotion. The religious procession, or yatra, is a 17-day great event that draws travellers to this location. Palkhis featuring images of Maharashtra’s saints are also carried by them.
An image of Saint Dnyaneshwar is bought from Alandi; Saint Namdev’s image is brought from Narsi Namdev; Saint Tukaram’s image is brought from Dehu; Saint Eknath’s image is carried from Paitan; Saint Nivruttinath’s image is carried from Trimbakeshwar; Saint Muktabai’s image is carried from Muktainangar; Saint Sopan’s image is carried from Saswad; and Saint Gajanan Maharaj from Shegoan.
“Warkaris” is a name given to pilgrims. They perform Abhangas dedicated to God. Even a story was shown to them. Students took a round of the auditorium singing and dancing with the palkhi in their hands, and even played fugadi with their teachers. It was a moment worth cherishing.
In this way, teachers explained the importance of festivals which students enjoyed a lot.
Meantime, the pre-primary section of S.B. Patil Public School also arranged the Ekadashi palkhi procession. The little warkaris looked very cute in their traditional attire as they chanted "Vithhal Vitthal, Jai Hari!!"
Class teachers explained the importance of Ashadhi Ekadashi and the palkhi procession to students who understood the tradition. Teachers also narrated stories of Sant Dyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj.
The atmosphere was filled with gaiety and spirituality as students started the palkhi procession by reciting Bhajans and Abhangs of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj.
All teachers and staff members were enchanted by the enthusiasm of the tiny tots as they chanted, “ताल वाजे, मृदूंग वाजे, वाजे हरीचा वीणा। माउली निघाले पंढरपूर, मुखाने विठ्ठल विठ्ठल बोला। जय जय राम कृष्ण हरी।”
