Transforming Education:The Remodelled Structure of Assessment and Evaluation in Indian Education Workshops
Pune Maharashtra | 2nd and 17th January, 2025
In the rapidly evolving landscape of education, the methods used to assess and evaluate students play a critical role in shaping the learning experience. Recently, a series of professional development training sessions shed light on the changing paradigms of assessment and evaluation in India’s educational system. The focus of these sessions was primarily on how the shift introduced by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is transforming the landscape, with a strong emphasis on competency-based assessment and the application of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Part 1: Evolution of Assessment Methods in Indian Education
Resource person and vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda kicked off the discussion by offering a comprehensive historical overview of assessment practices in India. The session traced the development of assessment and evaluation methods from the early educational models to the present day.
Ms. Banda highlighted how the structure of assessments has been shaped by various educational commissions and policy reforms over the years. The most significant change came with the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which ushered in a new era of educational reforms, placing emphasis on holistic development, competency-based learning, and rethinking traditional assessment methods.
Teachers gained a deeper understanding of how the NEP 2020 reforms are designed to reshape assessment patterns, moving away from rote memorization to more meaningful, skill-based evaluations. This shift is part of a broader vision to equip students not just with academic knowledge but with real-world competencies.
Part 2: Competency-Based Assessment and Bloom’s Taxonomy
In the second training session, resource persons and secondary teaching faculties, Ms. Prutha Vaidya and Ms. Pravina More headed the session.
Ms. Vaidya focused on the practical aspects of the revamped assessment structure, with particular emphasis on the shift from rote learning to competency-based assessment. She explained how these reforms are not only intended to evaluate students' academic performance but also to measure their ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts
She then outlined the three types of assessments that teachers need to be familiar with:
1. Formative Assessments: Ongoing evaluations conducted during the learning process to monitor student progress and provide feedback.
2. Summative Assessments: Final assessments that evaluate the cumulative knowledge a student has gained over a specific period.
3. Diagnostic Assessments: A pre-assessment used to identify students' existing knowledge gaps before introducing new content.
By focusing on these assessment strategies, teachers can better track the development of key competencies in their students, ensuring that each child progresses at their own pace.
Ms. Pravina More delved into the importance of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the context of the new assessment framework. Bloom’s Taxonomy, a hierarchical model for categorizing cognitive learning objectives, provides an essential structure for evaluating the depth and complexity of student learning
Ms. More explained the six levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy - Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating - and how they can be used to frame assessments that are not merely focused on recalling facts but encourage higher-order thinking and creativity. By understanding these levels, teachers can craft assessments that challenge students to think critically and creatively, as opposed to simply regurgitating memorized information.
To put the theory into practice, the session included an interactive activity where teachers were tasked with creating a blueprint for a ten-mark question paper based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. This hands-on exercise allowed teachers to develop lesson plans that engage students at various cognitive levels, implement differentiated instruction, tailoring activities to suit different student understanding levels, and create well-rounded assessments that evaluate students beyond their ability to memorize facts, instead testing their ability to analyze, evaluate, and create based on learned content.
This approach ensures that assessments become a tool for deepening learning and enabling students to demonstrate their understanding in various ways, aligning with the goals of the NEP 2020.
The Reimagined Structure of Assessment and Evaluation provides several key benefits for teachers and students alike:
1. Strategic Lesson Planning: Teachers can develop lessons that target different levels of cognition, ensuring that all students are challenged appropriately and meaningfully.
2. Differentiated Instruction: By applying Bloom’s Taxonomy, educators can implement strategies that cater to a diverse range of learners, from those who need foundational support to those ready for more complex tasks.
3. Comprehensive Evaluation: The new assessment models move away from simplistic exams and offer more holistic evaluation methods that reflect students' true capabilities.
In conclusion, the training sessions emphasised how the evolution of assessment and evaluation in India, catalysed by the NEP 2020, aims to foster a more comprehensive and competency-driven educational system. Teachers now have the tools and strategies to move beyond traditional rote learning, embracing assessments that prioritize critical thinking, creativity, and real-world problem-solving skills. As these reforms continue to take shape, educators are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Indian education.

Being a Hero through a Zero:
Transforming One’s Kitchen Into a Zero-waste Haven
Pune, Maharashtra | 10th January, 2025
Mr. Hemat Bapat is an engineer by educational qualification and a Certified Career Mentor. This session was conducted on 10th Jan 2025 for Grade VI and VII students as a Bagless day activity
Under the theme – the United Nation’s SDG #14: Life Below Water - Mr. Hemant Bapat shared how his Zero Waste Kitchen practice since last 12 years is transforming his kitchen into a zero-waste haven.
It is both rewarding and impactful. By adopting these sustainable practices, we’ll save money, reduce waste, and create a healthier home environment. Start small, build new habits, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing we’re contributing to a greener future—one kitchen at a time!
Zero kitchen waste can be incredibly helpful for life below water in several ways. When kitchen waste, such as food scraps, oils, or plastics, ends up in the ocean, it can cause pollution and harm marine ecosystems. Here’s how reducing kitchen waste can benefit marine life:
1. Reduced Ocean Pollution: Food scraps and packaging that aren’t disposed of properly often end up in the ocean. When you cut down on kitchen waste, there’s less chance of it making its way to water bodies, reducing ocean pollution.
2. Less Plastic in the Ocean: Many food items are wrapped in plastic, and reducing waste means less plastic is produced, used, and discarded. Plastics can take hundreds of years to break down and are harmful to marine life, causing ingestion or entanglement.
3. Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Kitchen waste that goes to landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Climate change negatively impacts oceans by increasing sea temperatures and causing ocean acidification, which affects marine biodiversity.
4. Support for Sustainable Practices: By practicing zero waste, you're encouraging more sustainable consumption. This can include buying less processed food (which often comes with excessive packaging) or choosing products that are eco-friendly, supporting practices that help preserve marine ecosystems.
5. Healthier Marine Ecosystems: If less waste is dumped into the water, marine life can thrive. Reducing food waste also reduces the chances of nutrient overload in water bodies, which can lead to harmful algal blooms, depleting oxygen and harming marine life.
By making small changes in how you manage kitchen waste, you’re helping reduce the pollution that makes its way into the oceans and ultimately supporting the health of life below water. It’s a small action that can make a big impact!
Mr. Bapat also shared that a terrace garden combined with a zero-kitchen-waste approach can be an excellent way to create a sustainable and eco-friendly living space. By composting, here’s how you can be a sustainable practice.
Kitchen Waste as Fertiliser: Instead of throwing away food scraps, you can compost them. Kitchen waste like vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and even small amounts of paper can be turned into nutrient-rich compost. This compost can then be used to nourish the plants in your terrace garden.
Students were excited and encouraged for Zero Kitchen Waste practices for by seeing actual photographs of Mr. Bapat’s terrace garden.

A Knowledge-exchange of Robotics:
A Twinning Programme with Beena English School
Pune, Maharashtra | 30th November, 2024
On 30th November, 2024, S.B. Patil Public School hosted a remarkable twinning programme session with Beena English School (BES). The event focused on robotics, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between students from two schools with the aim to introduce the students of BES to the fascinating world of robotics in an engaging and interactive way. It was a delightful learning experience that brought together students from our school and their peers from a neighbouring school
The event began with the arrival of 60 Grade VI students from BES, who, along with their faculty members, Ms. Kulsoom Khan and Ms. Shabnam Shikalgar, were warmly welcomed by the students and staff of our school.
To kick off the event, the robotics faculty members of S.B. Patil Public School took charge of an informative and inspiring orientation session.
Understanding that many of the BES students were new to the concept of robotics, the faculty made sure to explain the basics along with the different classes and types of levers; topics like fulcrum, load and effort – all using examples from daily life. Through visual demonstrations and interactive discussions, the students were introduced to the core principles of robotics — from basic tools to the various functions robots can perform in today's world.
After this, 46 students from our school were paired into groups of four with those of BES wherein they worked together with robotics kits to build models. With the goal to inspire curiosity and spark a sense of wonder about the endless possibilities that robotics offers, the students from our school helped those of BES to build basic models, and then encouraged them to go ahead and build their own creative models. Through this, students were able to learn new methodologies and techniques that integrate science into their daily life.
The guest students and faculty were provided snacks after the event, and even transport facilities from their school and back again.
We thank our principal, Dr. Bindu Saini; vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda; administrative manager, Mr. Manish Dhekale; section coordinator Ms. Vandana Sangle; and our robotics faculty for organising and conducting this collaboration so beautifully

Enhancing Skill Labs for Future Careers:
A Virtual Benchmark Visit with BCM Arya Model School, Ludhiana
Pune, Maharashtra; and Ludhiana, Punjab | 27th November, 2024
On Wednesday, 27th November 2024, at 10:30 am, S.B. Patil Public School conducted a virtual visit with BCM Arya Model School in Ludhiana, Punjab. The focus was on the implementation of skill subjects and the development of skill labs within the school. This visit was an essential step in exploring how educational institutions are integrating practical, career-oriented skills into their curriculum in alignment with CBSE guidelines.
The primary goal of this virtual benchmark visit was to understand the setup and structure of BCM Arya Model School’s skill labs. The school has been proactively working on enhancing its curriculum with skill-based education, which includes vocational training and subjects such as design thinking. By reviewing their existing resources and infrastructure, the S.B. Patil Public School team hoped to gather valuable insights for setting up or upgrading skill labs at their own institution
One of the key takeaways from the visit was learning how skill labs are being effectively integrated into the academic environment. These labs not only foster creativity and practical knowledge but also prepare students for future careers by equipping them with relevant vocational skills. As part of the CBSE's initiative to create separate skill subjects, these labs are tailored to meet the growing demand for students to develop competencies that will serve them well in the job market
The virtual visit allowed educators from our school to assess the facilities, methodologies, and best practices in place at BCM Arya Model School. By evaluating these elements, the aim was to incorporate these insights into their own system, thereby enhancing the practical learning experiences for students and ensuring they are better prepared for the challenges of tomorrow’s workforce
In conclusion, the virtual visit was a productive step toward understanding how skill labs can be optimally set up and integrated into a school’s curriculum. The exchange of ideas and knowledge gained from BCM Arya Model School will guide S.B. Patil Public School in further improving its skill-based educational programs, ultimately benefiting students as they take th eir first steps into their professional careers.
During the SDC meeting held in late November 2024, PCET Vice Chairperson, Ms. Padma M. Bhonsle enquired about the highlights of this virtual visit as the management is always ready to further skill development amongst students. Principal, Dr. Bindu Saini described the need for developing separate skill subjects as per the CBSE guidelines. Ms. Bhonsle mentioned that space is the only constraint as far as skill labs development is concerned. However, she appreciated the process of virtual visits for skill development.
We thank Dr. Kiran Saini, principal of BCM Arya School; and the team from BCMAS for lending us their valuable time to give us a virtual tour of the school.

S.B. Patil Public School Hosts KHOJ: An Inter-school Faculty Convention on the United Nations' SDG #4
Pune, Maharashtra | 9th November, 2024
In an era of rapid technological advancement and evolving educational practices, it has become increasingly vital for educators to stay ahead of the curve. The need for continuous professional development is crucial as schools aim to provide inclusive and effective learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body. With this in mind, S.B. Patil Public School, Pune launched a significant initiative that sought to bring educators together for a dynamic exchange of ideas: KHOJ: An Inter-school Faculty Convention on the United Nations' SDG #4.
An acronym for A “Journey of Knowledge, Hypothesis and Observation”, this maiden venture was designed to offer educators across Maharashtra a platform to present research and share best practices on the theme, “Innovative and Inclusive Pedagogies for Generation Alpha”.
The event emphasised the critical importance of inclusivity in the classroom, recognising that students come from varied cultural, social, and academic backgrounds. This approach sought to ensure that no child is left behind, fostering an environment of equitable education for all.
Educators face the challenge of navigating multi dimensional and multicultural classrooms. As artificial intelligence and technology are not just part of everyday life but also reshape education, teachers now have access to a wealth of resources to cater to the diverse needs of learners. However, as experts in the field emphasised during the convention, it is essential for educators to constantly reassess and refine their teaching methods to stay aligned with the rapidly changing educational paradigm
KHOJ sought to address this need by providing a space for educators to engage in knowledge exchange, contribute to ongoing research, and benchmark effective teaching practices. The event underscored the importance of enjoyment, commitment, positivity, and reflection in teaching. In addition to these core principles, the convention highlighted the role of research in an educator’s professional growth, encouraging teachers to stay engaged in ongoing learning and development
One of the main goals of KHOJ was to enable educators to enhance their skills, knowledge, and understanding, particularly when introducing changes to the curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment. This focus on professional learning was intended to clarify the processes and priorities that underlie successful teaching practices, ultimately leading to more strategic, effective, and impactful instruction
The convention provided educators with the opportunity to refine their understanding of the professional and policy contexts surrounding education, both locally and nationally. By doing so, it empowered teachers to increase their influence and voice within their educational communities, contributing to the development of more effective and responsive school environments
The event featured several key components, including an orientation session on 3rd September, 2024, where participating faculty members were briefed on the expectations for their presentations. On 26th September, 2024, principal, Dr. Bindu Saini held a workshop on Emotional Intelligence for the entire school faculty: academic and administrative included
In the two-hour interactive session, Dr. Saini, who herself has completed a Diploma in Emotional Intelligence from Yale University, USA spoke about the definition of EI and its aspects; the primary and secondary emotions and the dominant emotions; the RULER approach by Prof. Marc Brackett, founder of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence; and the skills to become emotionally intelligent.
What grasped the attention of everyone was the fact that Dr. Saini used real-life examples from school to illustrate every topic. This made every word being spoken personally resonate with each and every faculty member.
To illustrate the execution of emotional intelligence specifically with focus on reacting vs responding in conversations, vice principal, Ms. Padmavati Banda; and faculty members, Ms. Anjali Gugale, Ms. Sanjana Sabu, and Ms. Swaleha Mujawar enacted a teacher-student interaction in class. The enactment displayed how one person’s reaction vs. response can drastically affect the reaction vs. response of the recipient.
The session was highly lauded by faculty members wherein they conveyed how all that was spoken was relatable both personally and professionally.
Following is a testimonial by faculty member, Dr. Rohit Sarkar who was part of the session:
“Whilst we speak about physical health, and give priority to mental health, little focus is given to the emotional health. One can say that emotions are the synapses between our mind and our body. What we think gives rise to emotions, which, as Dr. Saini so eloquently put it, are expressed externally… and also affect our physical health.
Which is why, it is strictly my opinion, that this was an essential topic that needed to be conducted to help faculty members understand an overview on managing emotions. It was great to see Dr. Saini, the principal of our school, someone whom we revere… become human by giving herself as an example to illustrate real-life situations. The talk struck nerves; and made everyone feel that what they undergo is not something unique; everyone faces it
Of course, like mental health, emotional health and intelligence is a vast subject and cannot be covered in one session. It would be great if sessions like these could be conducted periodically whilst speaking on specific aspecs of emotional health and intelligence.
Thank you, Principal Ma’am for this session! We look forward to more of these.” – Dr. Rohit Sarkar, Media and Publishing Department Exec.

A Practical Understanding of Indian History:
A Visit to the Deccan College Archaeological Museum
Pune Maharashtra | 21st June, 2024
Education should be beyond the four walls of the classroom, for that motive, the Ministry of Education through The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 recommends that children’s life at school must be linked to their life outside the school and this also
continues in recently proposed New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
On 21st June, 2024, S.B Patil Public School’s Grade VI students visited the Archaeological Museum at Deccan College, Pune. The field trip began with lots of enthusiasm and vigour as the heritage tour was a perfect example of connecting the gap between learning, knowledge, and real-life experiences which develop and broaden the students’
cultural perspective.
Our national leaders and reformers like Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar also studied and got education from Deccan College which reflects the college’s legacy and heritage. It is a prestigious institution that has great work in research not only in India but in the world for subjects like archaeology, museum science, linguistics, and Sanskrit.
The visit was an engaging activity as students received hands-on experience on exploring artefacts, historical context and honing research skills. it also gave them a study of selective cultural remains of the human past and aimed to provide information on ancient Indian history culture and archaeology to the students,
teachers as well as general public.
The learning proved to be essential and a practical experience of all they learn in their textbooks on history in chapters such as ‘Our Pasts’. The chapter speaks about the journey of human life from hunters and gatherers to the Indus Valley Civilisation. Within this journey of learning they learned about different historical sources like inscriptions, ancient manuscripts,
excavation sites, coins, and sculptures
Students got a real-life experience to see all this and connect it with their school syllabus. Dr. Neelam Kale, a post-doctorate in archaeology and a faculty from Deccan College conducted a lecture for all the students to make them more aware about the topics covered.
We thank the whole management and staff of the S.B. Patil School and the Deccan College team for organising a wonderful trip for the Grade VI students.

Following is a testimonial by Grade X Student, Devesh Pawar:
“Our recent field visit was to Vatsalya, a center for children with down syndrome on Wednesday, 12th June, 2024 during school hours. This centre was founded by Vrushali ma'am in 2017 at Dehu Gaon, Rajgurunagar.
It was a deeply touching experience. The founder told us about the centre, why she started the centre, how are the people trained and handled over there who have Down’s Syndrome, how they earn money by doing jobs like diya painting, paper shredding etc.
We were also told about the 21 types of Down’s Syndrome after which, students from our school sang songs, performed dances and delivered speeches for those present these. After each and every performance, they we were applauded which indicates that those patients understand the value of others work. As entertainment will not provide a living, all students from Grade X donated groceries to the centre.
This field trip was not for fun, not for learning, but it was for realisation… realisation that we are so lucky that we have a brain that functions properly and senses that runs smoothly. Thus, we learned that we should live in a proper way in the society; we should be disciplined, punctual, honest and respect everyone and their choices. These aside, we experienced many such heart-touching scenarios that can't be expressed in words.
We thank the school and all those who organised this trip which proved to be such an enriching experience. I request all to visit Vatsalya ay least one time.” - Devesh Sadanand Pawar (X-E)
